Nadan Parippu Curry, starter for a Kerala Sadya
Ingredients needed for the Recipe Nadan Parippu Curry
1 cup whole green gram
3 cups water
1 cup grated coconut
2-3 green chillis
1/2 tsp Cumin / Jeera
a pinch or two turmeric powder
3 tsps cococnut oil
2 tsps small onions chopped
1 pinch mustard seeds
2 red chillies
curry leaves
Salt to taste
How to prepare Nadan Parippu Curry?
Heat a pan, dry roast green gram till a nice aroma comes and the dal changes colour slightly.
Remove from fire and keep aside.
Add the water to the dal and pressure cook till done. When cool mash the contents or blend well in a mixer. Just a few seconds should be enough or it will be a paste.
Grind grated coconut, cumin seeds, green chillies and turmeric powder to a smooth paste and keep aside.
Heat oil / ghee in a fry pan.Splutter mustard seeds.
Then add chopped onions, curry leaves and broken red chillies. Fry till the onions turn golden brown.
Pour over the dal. Mix well .
Serve with rice, ghee, dal and pappadams together to have an heavenly meal. This dish is served as a starter on the banana leaf on the right hand side , that is next to the rice.
