Ingredients needed for the Thakkali Curry
3 tomatoes
1/2 cup fresh grated coconut
1 tsp chilli powder
2 tsps garam masala
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
3 tbsps coconut oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp small onions / shallots chopped
1 few curry leaves
salt to taste
2 red chillies
water as needed for the gravy
How to prepare Thakkali curry
Cut tomatoes in to small pieces. Keep aside.
Grind fresh grated coconut to a smooth paste.
Heat oil in a fry pan,splutter mustard seeds. Add broken red chillies and curry leaves.
As the leaves get brown add chopped small onions.
Fry till the onions turn golden.
Add chilli powder, garam masala powder and salt to taste. Saute for a minute and then add chopped tomatoes.
Once the tomatoes get pulpy and soft, add the coconut paste.
Simmer and keep stirring till the paste gets cooked. Then add enough water and adjust the consistency to your taste.
Sprinkle chopped coriander and serve hot.
Points to Note while cooking the recipe:
If you are going to serve with rice the gravy should be a little watery.
If you are going to serve it with chappathi, the gravy should be a little thicker.
If you like to bite into tomato pieces, do not make it pulpy, just cook till they are soft.
